About the Word & Character Counter
Count the words, characters, sentences and paragraphs in any text as you type or paste it. Use it to hit an essay word count, stay under a character limit, or check the length of a post or product description.
How to use it
- 1 Type or paste your text into the Text box.
- 2 Read the total under Words. It updates after a short pause in typing.
- 3 Check Characters, Sentences and Paragraphs in the Statistics column.
- 4 Click Clear to empty the box and count a new text.
Frequently asked questions
A word is anything between spaces or line breaks that contains at least one letter or digit, so "don't", "well-known", "4.99" and "[email protected]" each count as one word, while a lone dash or ampersand counts as none. Text is counted as typed, so pasted HTML tags count too. Accented letters and alphabets such as Greek and Cyrillic are counted as well.
Yes. Characters counts everything in the box, including spaces, punctuation and line breaks.
A period, exclamation mark or question mark ends a sentence when a space, a line break or the end of the text follows it, so the dots in "4.99" or "example.com" do not, and text with none counts as one sentence. Abbreviations such as "e.g." still end one, so treat the sentence count as an estimate. Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by a blank line. A sentence or paragraph only counts if it contains a word.
The box holds up to 100,000 characters. Longer text is trimmed to the first 100,000 characters, and a notice tells you when that happens.
