- 3 Enter your Height in centimeters or in total inches.
- 4 Read your Body mass index and Category, and compare them with the BMI categories table.
Frequently asked questions
BMI is weight divided by height squared. In metric units it is kg ÷ m², with your height converted from centimeters to meters. In imperial units it is 703 × lb ÷ in².
For adults, a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is classed as normal weight. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight and 30 or more is obese. These are the World Health Organization ranges for adults.
Choose Imperial and enter your total height in inches: multiply the feet by 12 and add the remaining inches. For example, 5 ft 9 in is 69 inches.
BMI is a quick screening figure, not a diagnosis. It cannot tell muscle from fat, so it can overstate fat in muscular people, and children and teens are assessed with age-based percentiles instead of these adult ranges.
