Slug Generator
About the Slug Generator
Convert a blog post title, product name or heading into a clean URL slug. The tool lowercases the text, transliterates accented characters and other scripts such as Cyrillic or Chinese to plain letters, drops punctuation and joins the words with the separator you choose.
How to use it
- 1 Choose a separator: Hyphen (-), Underscore (_) or Dot (.).
- 2 Type or paste your text into the String to slugify pane.
- 3 Read the result in the Generated slug pane as you type.
- 4 Click Copy and use the slug in your URL, file name or CMS.
Frequently asked questions
A slug is the readable part of a URL that identifies a page, such as how-to-bake-bread in example.com/blog/how-to-bake-bread. Short, descriptive slugs are easier to share and to understand in search results.
Use hyphens in URLs. Google recommends hyphens to separate words because it treats them as word breaks, while underscores join words together. Underscores and dots suit file names and identifiers.
Accented letters are transliterated to plain ASCII, so Crème brûlée becomes creme-brulee. The @ sign becomes the word "at", and other punctuation is removed.
No. Every word is kept, so you stay in control. Delete any words you do not want from the text before copying the slug.
The input is limited to 2,000 characters, far more than any title needs. For SEO, aim for a slug of a few descriptive words.
