Frequently asked questions
A UUID (universally unique identifier) is a 128-bit value written as 32 hexadecimal digits in five groups, 8-4-4-4-12, such as 3f5cbe58-8c4f-49f4-8f7b-88b1df7cbe60. GUID is Microsoft's name for the same thing.
Version 4, built from 122 random bits. It needs no clock or machine ID, which makes it the most common choice for database keys and request IDs.
In practice, no. With 122 random bits you would need to generate around a billion UUIDs every second for decades before a single duplicate became likely.
It checks the format: 32 hexadecimal digits in 8-4-4-4-12 groups separated by hyphens, in upper or lower case. It accepts any UUID version and cannot tell whether a value was ever issued.
