What does lorem ipsum mean?
Lorem ipsum doesn't mean anything. It comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the ends of good and evil"), a work of philosophy Cicero wrote in 45 BC. The passage was cut and altered until it stopped being readable Latin. The opening word "lorem" is the tail of "dolorem" ("pain"), from the original phrase "dolorem ipsum" ("pain itself").

Typesetters used it for decades. It spread on Letraset dry-transfer sheets in the 1960s, then reached a much wider audience when desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker shipped with it in the 1980s.
Why designers use placeholder text
Readable text pulls attention. Put "Our prices are going up" in a mockup and the meeting turns into a debate about pricing instead of the layout. Lorem ipsum has a mix of short and long words that looks roughly like English on the page, but nobody can read it, so reviewers look at the design: font size, line height, column width and how the blocks sit together.
That strength is also the weakness. Placeholder text hides problems that only real content reveals, such as headings that wrap to three lines or button labels that don't fit. Use it for layout, and switch to real words as soon as the content decides whether the design works.

Placeholder text strategies that work
Match the length of the real content
A product card that will hold a 60-character name should be tested with about 60 characters, not a tidy two-word title. Paste a few real samples into the word and character counter to see how long your content usually runs, then generate placeholder text of a similar size.
Test the extremes, not just the average
Generate one very short and one very long version of each text element. Check a heading with a single word, a heading that wraps, an empty description and a description three times longer than expected. Translated text often runs longer than English, so leave room if the product will be localized.
Use real copy where words drive the design
Pricing tables, sign-up forms, error messages, navigation and calls to action depend on exact wording. Lorem ipsum in those places hides the questions that matter, such as whether "Start free trial" fits on a phone-sized button. Write rough real copy for these elements from the first draft.
Use realistic data in data-heavy screens

Common mistakes with lorem ipsum
- Shipping it. Placeholder text that reaches a live page looks careless, and search engines index it like any other text. Search your templates and content for "lorem" and "ipsum" before every launch.
- Leaving it in alt text and metadata. Screen readers read lorem ipsum aloud as gibberish. Check image alt attributes, page titles and meta descriptions, which are easy to miss in a visual review.
- Approving designs on placeholder text alone. Sign-off on a layout should include at least one review with real or realistic content.
- Using the same block everywhere. Identical text in every card makes a design look more uniform than it will be. Regenerate for each block, or vary the count.
