How to play Wordle
- 1 Type any 5-letter word with your keyboard or the on-screen keys, then press Enter to submit it.
- 2 Every guess must be a real word. Words the game does not recognize are rejected and do not use up a try.
- 3 After each guess the tiles change color. Green means the letter is in the word and in the right spot, yellow means it is in the word but in a different spot, and gray means it is not in the word.
- 4 Use the colors to narrow down your next guess. The keyboard keeps track of every letter you have tried.
- 5 Find the word within 6 guesses to win. A new word arrives every day at midnight UTC, the same for every player.
- Green
- P, N and T are in the word and in the right spot.
- Yellow
- A is in the word, but in a different spot.
- Gray
- I is not in the word.
Frequently asked questions
Each copy of a letter is checked on its own. Exact matches turn green first, then any remaining copies turn yellow from left to right, and copies beyond how many times the letter appears in the answer turn gray.
Yes. Each guess must be a 5-letter word from the game's list of almost 15,000 English words. A word that is not on the list is rejected with "Not in word list" and does not count as one of your 6 tries.
A new word goes live every day at midnight UTC. Everyone who plays on the same day gets the same word, so you can compare results with friends.
There is one daily Wordle, and your guesses are saved as you go, so you can close the page and finish it later. For more, press Practice to play as many extra words as you like. Practice words are picked at random, are never today's word and do not count toward your streak or stats.
Solving the daily word adds one to your streak. Running out of guesses or skipping a day starts it over. The game also records your games played, wins and how many guesses each win took.
