Nerdle
A practice puzzle. Play as many as you like: they never count toward your streak.
How to play Nerdle
- 1 Enter an 8-character equation such as 12+35=47 using the digits 0 to 9 and + − × ÷ =, then press Enter. On a keyboard, type * for × and / for ÷.
- 2 Every guess must be true math with exactly one equals sign. Multiplication and division are worked out before addition and subtraction.
- 3 After each guess the tiles change color. Green means the character is in the right spot, yellow means it is in the equation but in a different spot, and gray means it is not in the equation.
- 4 Use the colors to narrow down your next guess. The keypad keeps track of every number and symbol you have tried.
- 5 Find the equation within 6 guesses to win. A new puzzle arrives every day at midnight UTC, the same for every player.
- Green
- + and = are in the right spots.
- Yellow
- 1 and 5 are in the equation, but in different spots.
- Gray
- 2, 3, 4 and 7 are not in the equation.
Frequently asked questions
A guess must be exactly 8 characters long and mathematically true, with one equals sign and a number or calculation on each side. Numbers cannot have a leading zero (like 05), two operators cannot sit next to each other, and the result cannot be negative.
Yes. Multiplication and division are worked out before addition and subtraction, so 3+2×4=11 is a valid guess. Every division has to come out to a whole number.
No. The answer has to match character for character. A rearranged equation is still a valid guess and its tiles show which characters are in the right spot, but only the exact equation solves the puzzle.
The daily equation always has two numbers and one operation on the left of the equals sign and a single number on the right, such as 51+18=69 or 224÷56=4. Your own guesses can be more complex, like 10-5=2+3.
Each copy is checked on its own. Exact matches turn green first, then remaining copies turn yellow from left to right, and copies beyond how many the equation contains turn gray.
A new equation goes live every day at midnight UTC, and everyone who plays that day gets the same one. Your guesses are saved as you go, so you can come back later to finish.
There is one daily equation. For more, press Practice to play as many extra equations as you like. Practice equations are picked at random, are never today's equation and do not count toward your streak or stats.
